We love Red River, NM and once a year we’ll go for a week or two. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the best Red River, NM RV parks.
Red River is located in Taos County, NM in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains (Blood of Christ Mountains). This is a list of some of the best Red River NM RV parks.

Roadrunner RV Resort
The Roadrunner RV Resort is located on the east side of town and sits along a portion of the Red River. We stayed here with some friends and both my wife and I really like this RV park. It’s clean and well laid out with easy pull-in and pull-out in most cases. The staff is exceptionally nice though hey can be a little lax sometimes with unleashed or barking dogs.
There is a small area for kids to play and if you enjoy fishing you can get plenty of it along the river. There 121 site available. The park feature pull-thru sites, tent camping, 30 or 50 amp service, sewer and water and WiFi connectivity. Don;t expect very fast speeds when it comes to the WiFi.
Amenities include restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, camp store thought somewhat limited, and a pet area.
Rental rates are approximately $45 for 30-amp sites, $50 for 50-amp sites or $900 and $1200 per month respectively. These rates include DirectTV and WiFi and
Elephant Rock Campground
Elephant Rock Campground is located on New Mexico State Highway 38 about 3 miles west of Red River NM at an elevation of nearly 8,600 on the GPS. The campground has 20 sites that are suitable for either tent camping or a travel trailer. Each site has potable water and vault toilets as well as a fire ring, picnic table and a tent pad. The spots are spaced enough apart that you do have some privacy
The campsites are nestled among a mix of fir, spruce, aspen, and ponderosa pine. This campground offers excellent fishing along the Red River which is frequently stocked. You will also find Eagle Rock Lake nearby and well as some excellent hiking trails.
Fawn Lakes Trail is about .3 miles from the campground close to Fawn Lakes Campground. This hiking trail meets accessibility guidelines. From this campground, it is easy to make a day trip to the town of Red River or a nice drive on the Enchanted Circle.
Columbine Campground
Columbine Campground is located between Red River and Questa, NM. The beautiful Red River flows just past the campground and there is a trailhead leading into the Columbine-Hondo Wilderness area. This campground sits at an elevation of 7,900 feet above sea level.
It offers 26 campsites each with a fire ring, picnic table, and tent pad. The campground offers potable water and vault toilets.
The layout of the campground is made up of two loops. There is a small loop at the entrance to the campground and those sites offer an open view of the towering mountains. The second loop is longer and goes up along the canyon alongside the flowing Columbine Creek. These sites in the longer loop are nestled among spruce, pine, and aspen providing good shade and good privacy between sites.
If hiking is your thing you will find 14 miles of hiking trails on the Columbine Twining trail that can be accessed at the south end of the campground. Overall an excellent campground in beautiful Carson National Forest.
Fawn Lakes Campground
Fawn Lakes Campground is one of our favorite daytime destinations while in Red River. It is one of the few campgrounds located along the Red River canyons. It is truly a beautiful campground.
The campground has 18 family overnight sites. 3 of the 18 sites are tent-only sites. You will find vault toilets and drinking waters. If you need firewood you can purchase it from the host.
If you enjoy fishing you have access to the Red River which runs adjacent to the campground. You also have two small fishing lakes which we have had good success at. Lots of trout to catch at these two lakes.
The surrounding mountains are covered in ponderosa pine and offer lots of shade. Hiking is just a short 4 miles away on the Columbine Trailhead which commences at the Columbine Campgrounds.
Red River RV Park
Red River RV Park is located about 1/4 mile west of town and sits along the Red River. They offer 30 and 50 amp sites with full hook up. You get free WiFi and cable and you have access to laundry and shower facilities. If you need ice it can be purchased at the campground.
The park is open year round and each site has a picnic table. No tent camping is allowed. Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash while outside. They used to have “yurts” for rent but they are no longer available.
The campground has direct access to the Red River for fishing and many ATC trails and hiking trails are nearby.
Summary of Best Red River, NM RV Parks
If we had to pick our favorite RV park it would be Roadrunner. It is well-maintained, close to town, easy in and out, good fishing spots and the staff keeps everything in check. The campgrounds offered in Carson National Forest are nice also if you prefer something a little bit more primitive but still easily accessible.
